A popular firework for kids is more dangerous than you might think

Jul 01, 2025

UPPER MICHIGAN (WLUC) - With Independence Day on Friday, fireworks might be part of your celebrations.

Experts have some important reminders to help you, and your friends and family stay safe.

Marquette Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Gregorich says sparklers burn at over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. He says sparklers account for 29% of the injuries in kids under 5.

Aspirus Health Emergency Physician Dr. Eric Maki says burns can also happen after a firework has gone out.

“Even when the firework has completed, the residual stick from the sparkler remains very hot and are things that people often use with small children and so is certainly always a risk and is something we commonly see with burns,” Dr. Maki said.

Gregorich recommends soaking used fireworks in water for two hours. If a burn happens, Dr. Maki says to act fast.

“With burn-related injuries are to make sure you cool the area initially by placing any cool water if you have a first aid kit to be able to cover those wounds as you make your way to seek appropriate care,” Dr. Maki said.

For explosive force injuries, Dr. Maki says to cover the wound while you wait for medical care.

Nationally, Gregorich says fireworks cause an estimated 31,000 fires each year. Watching professional fireworks is a safe alternative to home use, he says.

If you do light fireworks at home, he says you should keep an eye on pets and kids and remember alcohol and fireworks should never mix.

“In the event of a fire, it’s a good idea to call 911,” Gregorich said. “Fire departments take a little time to get there, fire can grow quickly, a quick response is very important as well.”

Gregorich says he hopes you enjoy your Independence Day, but he reminds you some things are best left to the professionals. You don’t want to end up as a statistic.
